Split Bamboo Fencing

Find out how to use split bamboo fencing to create a truly unique fence.

Like all the different types of bamboo, split bamboo fencing is durable and strong. It is used most often in areas where the weather is moderate and is a perfect material for use in tropical or desert climates.

Using split bamboo fencing produces a fence that is quite striking in appearance. But because it is split it loses some of its durability. While regular bamboo can last for as long as twenty years, split bamboo can be expected to stand up to the elements for about half this length of time.

Split bamboo fencing is different from regular bamboo fencing. Regular bamboo is used as it is grown, in one piece. Split bamboo, on the other hand, comes from only the outer part of bamboo shoots. The pieces are joined together with galvanized wire. Split bamboo often comes in rolls for use in fencing.

Manufacturers use split bamboo to make bamboo fencing panels. Here’s how it’s done. The split bamboo poles are connected with six to eight rows of wire to make up the panel.

Heavy duty galvanized wire goes along the tops and bottoms of the poles to keep the panels solid. The middle rows are usually connected with wire that is coated in rubber to allow for flexibility once they are part of a fence.

Once assembled, the split bamboo fencing panels are connected to wood posts. When the posts have been set in the ground, your fence is almost finished.

One important point to remember is that you have to use a frame made with wood posts that will be set into the ground. Don’t allow the bamboo part of the fence to touch the ground, as it will not last as long when this happens. In order for your fence to reach right to the ground, use wood to frame in the bottom portion of the panels.

Another option for split bamboo fencing is to tie it to a wall or an existing fence. This is a great way to dress up a plain wall, perhaps as a backdrop for your deck area. If you have an existing fence, it’s even easier.

Split bamboo works especially well on wooden fences because it can lie flat against the fence boards. It’s easy to anchor it to the fence by stapling it securely at the top, middle and bottom. It’s a good idea to use stainless steel staples to avoid rust spoiling the appearance of the fencing. If the panels are too long, they can be cut to fit.

When applying rolled bamboo panels to a chain link fence, the process is simple. Either wrap the rolled bamboo around the fence or drape the panels over the top. You can attach the panels with heavy-gauge but flexible steel wire tied equal distances apart.

Split bamboo fencing is an alternative to consider if you want a unique look for your deck or patio.
